Let me quote a few more passages from this book that describe these enduringly successful people so you can discover who these people are, rather than what they do.

One of the most important qualities of these enduringly successful people is that they “drone on endlessly about learning from their mistakes. … Every experience teaches something. They don’t use a weakness or a setback to distrust themselves. … The question is not whether or not they won this round, but what do they do with the feedback. … [They] find it irresistible to try, fail, improve; they try again, fail again, and get even better.” (Emphasis added.)
So what “are” successful people? In Success Built to Last, by Jerry Porras, Stewart Emery, and Mark Thompson, a must-read book about what is in common among over 200 “enduringly successful people,” the authors offer a definition of success based on what these people told them: “ … a life and work that brings personal fulfillment and lasting relationships and makes a difference in the world in which they live.”

2. Get in touch with who you really are, namely, the consciousness that always was and always will be. In my terms, the creator of your creation. You can use my “Who Am I Really?” Process to help you experience this state, where you also will experience on a very deep level that life has “already turned out” and that material success is not required for true success.
1. Get rid of any negative beliefs and conditionings that impair your confidence, that have you worry about what others think,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that have you act to gain “their” approval,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that have you fear failure and rejection.
If you haven’t yet eliminated at least one of your limiting self-esteem beliefs using the Lefkoe Belief Process, go to where you can eliminate one limiting belief free.

Because successful people are successful because of who they are, not merely what they do. Obviously they do things, but their doing is a function of their being,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not a function of “rules for success.”
These people “insist that success may never come without a compelling personal commitment to something you care about and would be willing to do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with or without counting on wealth, fame,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], power, or public acceptance as an outcome.”
They welcome failure
5. Learn how to distinguish between reality and how reality “occurs” to you, and then dissolve your occurring. Because events as such have no meaning, they can never cause any feelings, including fear, the biggest roadblock to taking action. So learning how to dissolve your occurring and deal only with unvarnished reality will enable you to banish fear from your life. (See for more details on “occurring.”)
Another essential element is “a highly developed sense of accountability, audacity, passion, and responsible optimism. … Steve Jobs told us in an interview back before his famous ad campaign: Enduringly successful people ‘think different.’” (Emphasis added.)
Personal qualities determine success
Although these people probably worked more hours a day than most people are willing to, they were not successful because they worked harder than others or even because they knew better than others what to do. They operated out of their passion and commitment to make a difference. They didn’t care what others thought. They courted failure as a way to learn what to do better the next time.
“What you do must matter deeply to you …. It’s something that you’re so passionate about that you lose all track of time when you do it. … In fact, you could not be paid to not do it.”
Are you willing to do what’s necessary?
I like what the book’s authors say about the conventional definition of success: “Folks who chase a fantastic but vain hope for fame, wealth, and power—for its own sake—may even achieve it, only to become miserable and pathetic people. … we think that the current definition of success is a potentially toxic prescription for your life and work. It is a description that makes you feel more like a failure than a success if it’s the standard against which all meaning in your life is measured.”
One common technique people use to figure out how to achieve their goals is to copy the behavior of successful people. Unfortunately, more often than not that technique doesn’t work. Why?
4,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Have your life be about living your passion and making a contribution to others. Put more of your focus on the journey than on the destination.
But, you might still be asking: What is their standard for deciding what to do? With their vision and commitment as a context, their actions are driven by their answer to the question: What behavior is appropriate to further my passion? Leave room for serendipity in your life. When you have white space on your calendar to think, write, call an old friend or colleague to catch up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or just breathe. Some days I find the most productive thing you can do is actually play hooky.
Change is in the air. I see it everywhere and in every person I seem to be bumping into or meeting with these days. New school year, new chapter, new beginnings, perhaps. Or maybe we're turning into a culture of innovation and reinvention by design or necessity. As Charles Darwin said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change."
I was scheduled to give two talks in the coming week and had other writing and speaking commitments planned for later in the month as well, none of which I felt fully prepared for. I was blocked on a few things I'd been thinking about and needed to get out of my rut. Was I overcommitted? Do I have unrealistic expectations for my time? What I realized after walking, talking and eating with my friend is that I should create more time for fun in my life when I cut out the people and things that drain me of my energy and enthusiasm. Easier said than done,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I know, but here are some effective tips I've found that should help create positive change in your business and your life:
Allow yourself to sleep enough. It's amazing how much you can accomplish when you're rested and feeling fresh.

Make this the year you deal with that issue that's been looming over your head--you know, the one you've avoided tackling. What do you have to lose? You may just solve it if you put it on the top of your to-do list and face it square on. Worst case, you'll try a few things that won't work, but you may just have that breakthrough you were hoping for after all.
Even if you don't end up making major changes in your business, making some of the small changes I mentioned will help you be more rested, relaxed and healthier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which sounds like a recipe for success to me.
Every year, I've tried to add something new to the mix with my business to keep it fresh and exciting for me and interesting for my colleagues and clients. I've joined new organizations and boards; focused on writing some years, speaking engagements,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], others; traveled more; traveled less; read more; read less; added experts in new categories; cut back in other verticals. This year, despite having agreed to be the entrepreneur-in-residence with a leading academic institution, I'm going to try a less-is-more approach, which isn't that easy for me. It's said that your thoughts become words, your words become actions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your actions become habit, your habits become character, and your character is your destiny. Fearing that I'm becoming my calendar, I decided last weekend,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when a friend called to play hooky,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I was going to join her and enjoy the spontaneity of the moment even though I had a ton of work to do. It was the weekend after all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I work too much as it is, and spending time with her always energizes me and creates more capacity for ideas and inspiration.
Expand your network. There are a lot of interesting people out there. Go to events or talks you typically don't attend. Join and organization tangentially related to your area of specialty or linked to a long lost hobby you used to love. There are wine groups, film clubs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], weekend ski trips, online organizations and groups for every interest you can imagine. Chances are, you'll meet some great people along the way.
It's not that I have trouble saying no; it's just that there are so many things I want to say yes to. And the older I get, the more things I find myself interested in. The problem is that I do my best thinking when I have down time and am not overscheduled. But unless I'm incredibly disciplined, it's hard for me to leave open spaces on my calendar. My tendency is to fill them, so I'll need some willpower to combat what comes most naturally to me.
Eat well and regularly; food is the fuel for your mind and body. Sit down and have a civilized meal, ideally with an interesting person or something great to read. It'll open your mind, expand your capacity, and create energy for your day.
Don't be scared to hit the pause button sometimes. There's no rewind in life, but so much of our time seems to be living in fast forward these days that when you feel like you need a break, you should listen to your gut and reflect on what's going on around you. There are times to sprint,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], times to recover and days that are just a marathon. Each serves an important purpose.
Try new things. Reach beyond your comfort zone so you continue to stretch and grow. You may just stumble into some activities you really enjoy and find out you have some hidden talents and skills you never realized. Keep those synapses firing--it may even help stave off Alzheimer's, so break those routines and shake things up a bit. Cruise control is for cars, not entrepreneurs.
Exercise, and get the blood flowing to all parts of your body. We lead sedentary lives today, spending too much time in front of our computers or behind the wheels of our cars. Get up and move, walk more, and do something aerobic every day. (OK, in the spirit of full disclosure: Do as I say, not as I do here!)

I learned this tool in my NLP and neuro-semantics training and used it numerous times to quickly change my limiting beliefs.
Now, look at the paper that has the enhancing belief on it and shout “YES” with a smile on your face preferably. In the same way, shout,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yell,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], do whatever it takes, but “YES”, you definitely want that belief to be a part of you.
This seemed so crazy when I tried it the first time. If you’re a serious guy who is so serious that he can’t possibly do a childish thing like that, put your Mickey Mouse ears before doing it or your clown nose. Don’t be so serious. Life is fun and beautiful, don’t you think?
But if you don’t like unconventional tools and techniques,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], don’t try it. I don’t want you to feel stupid. Simple. You need a pen, a paper, some space and your client. Write down on the first piece of paper what is the limiting belief and put it on the floor or the ground.

The most important influence on you is you. Intuition is a most valuable guide when it is strong and reliable. But intuition has defied scientific study, perhaps because it is different from the five human senses that are the starting point of scientific inquiry. Great minds - Descartes, Freud,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jung,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], de Chardin, Jaynes - have struggled to capture, or even to systematically study, the elusive essence of human intuition.
More recently, social scientists have attempted to study human phenomena like intuition through "grounded theory," a systematic analysis of human data without a preexisting theory, hypothesis, or expectation of findings, but with the goal of allowing a theory to emerge directly from the observed human data. Thus, the theory that emerges is grounded in the data, hence the term "grounded theory." This is, in effect, reverse engineering of a hypothesis. But reverse engineering can tell us things about intuition, things that are otherwise immune to scientific analysis. What useful information have the greatest intuitive minds in history revealed about intuition?

Historical Example of Intuition
Did Abraham ask his inner voice for a second message of confirmation when he perceived the first message to sacrifice his son? We'll never know. But I know that I would have asked for another inner message if I wasn't sure that I had understood the first inner message as it was intended if it was counseling me to commit physical harm to myself or another. And that's the data point about intuition that I take from the 4,000 year old story of Abraham and Isaac.
I leave the proper interpretation of this troubling biblical tale about faith and inner guidance to its thousands of commentators throughout history, but there is no doubt that the tale has fired the imagination of countless humans, people as diverse as Rembrandt (the creator of the painting depicted at the head of this piece) and Bob Dylan ("God said to Abraham: 'Kill me a son.' Abe said, 'God,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], You must be putting me on.'" - Highway 61 Revisited).
But the tale also tells me something significant about intuition: the critical importance of discernment in acting on inner messages. What does an inner listener do to discern an inner message? First, did the message come from the light within me, and not from my conscious mind, or from the dictates of society, or from some other, lesser source. Second,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], did I understand the message as it was intended by my light within? Although Abraham was convinced that the message was from the proper source, the message involved harm to another. So, he did not act on the first message until he received a second message,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one that counseled harmlessness, and that is the message that he followed.
Let us begin with Abraham. Reported to have lived around approximately 2000 B.C., Abraham is acknowledged as the progenitor of three of the world's greatest religions - Jewish,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Christian, and Islamic. Genesis states that the nation of Israel descended from Abraham through his second son, Isaac. Many Arab nations are said to have descended from Abraham through his first son,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ishmael,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Muslims believe that the prophet Muhammad is a direct descendant of Abraham.
One of humanity's oldest and most profound stories about inner direction is found in the biblical account of Abraham and Isaac, Genesis 22:1-18 (New International Version), where God told Abraham:
"Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."
Abraham followed the inner guidance. But as he reached for the knife, an angel called out to him:
"Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your only son."

If you already have nodes or nodules on your vocal folds, you have serious damage. And, unless you are in a situation in which you can stop talking for several months, this type of damage is not going away on its own. Even if you were able to stop talking for that length of time, the problem would return if you were to resort to the same manner of producing your sound as you did in the past.

Communication has many elements. You communicate with more than your words. You relay information with your entire body through:
1. Volume
2. Pitch

Learning assertiveness so that it comes naturally can take years of practice, but it is empowering and worth starting now. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll begin raising your self-esteem.

Additionally, your voice communicates through:
Congruence
When your words don’t match your insides, you’re sending a mixed message. A common example is when you say you’re fine, but your body language reveals the truth that you’re unhappy. Or, the opposite – you smile while imparting a sad story. In either case, your listener is confused and doesn’t know how to respond and/or may not feel that he or she can trust you.
The impact of your speech is inversely related to its duration. Your impact wanes with words. Your listener will want you to cut to the chase and get to the point. When you beat around the bush, it belies insecurity and/or lack of knowledge. When you’re afraid for any of the reasons mentioned above regarding incongruence, you might be tempted to have a long introduction or disclaimer. Don’t. If you’re fearful, sort out the reasons why,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], practice what you’ll say out loud, and weigh the long term repercussions of saying nothing or what you want.
1. You want to spare someone’s feelings.
2. You want to avert conflict.
3. You want to be liked and avoid judgment or criticism.

5. You don’t want to impose or burden someone.
6. You don’t want to jeopardize a relationship,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or
7. You don’t want to spend the time.
Timing is critical. Don’t start an important conversation in the car, or when he or she is watching TV, is on the computer, or otherwise occupied, without his or her permission. You’re being discourteous and interrupting their attention. You’ll be disappointed and are setting yourself up for an argument.
Cognizance of your audience is essential. You must hear in order to be heard. To be an effective communicator, listen with attention and respect to what others have to say. Genuine listening engages them and helps you attune your message so that others will be receptive. This is attentive, active listening. Paraphrasing and repeating what was said to you will show them that you care and are interested. In turn they’ll be more receptive when they believe they matter to you.

Communication is learned. With practice you can learn to communicate assertively, which will raise your self-esteem and self-assurance and improve your relationships and professional performance. Research has established that even fetuses can learn to communicate with their mothers. To learn the keys to assertiveness discussed below, remember the 6 C’s:
Be direct. Don’t ask questions, give hints, or speak in the abstract. Instead of “Do you want to go to a movie?” which is ambiguous as to whether you want to go, state, “I’d like to see a movie tonight.” Make a clear statement of what you think, feel, need, or want. Most communication comes down to those four essentials. You can also explain why.
Conciseness
Communication is so important that it can make or break a relationship, is critical to success, and instantly reflects your self-esteem to listeners – for better or for worse. Assertive communication commands respect, projects confidence, and inspires influence. It's respectful, direct, honest, open, non-threatening and non-defensive. It's not demanding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], aggressive, or manipulative.
1. Gesture
2. Eye contact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], movement, moisture, expression, and focus
3. Posture
4. Physical appearance
5. Voluntary and involuntary bodily movement, including muscular tension

The last one is tricky. Imagine you’re at a party and someone asks you a personal question that you don’t want to get into then and there. You might avoid the question in many ways, including ignoring it and changing the subject, or walking away to get a drink. You might think the reason is no. 7, but ask yourself why you wouldn’t directly say, “I prefer not to talk about that now (or here),” or “I don’t know you well enough to discuss that.” If you think the real answer is no. 1, think again. The foregoing assertive answers are less hurtful than impolite behavior.

Clarity
The purpose of communication is to impart information and feelings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not to vent, avenge, or scold. If you’re discourteous to listeners,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you’ll lose them. To be effective, you want to engage your listener. To do so, treat him or her with respect. Criticism that is constructive and delivered assertively is more likely to be heeded.
What you don’t say, your body reveals. Customs’ agents are expert at reading body language to spot liars. Key to effective communication is authenticity, meaning honesty and congruence. Truthfulness is about facts. Honesty has more to do with intent and feelings. Say what you think or feel, and mean what you say. You probably assume you already do this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet dishonesty is more common than you might guess. I’m not referring to overt lies, but about times you outwardly agree, but inwardly don’t. Some reasons are:

Place Fell is on the eastern side of Ullswater. The usual ascent is from Patterdale via Boredale Hause. The path has recently been improved and so (although steep) provides firm footing all the way to the summit ridge. This ridge also provides various peat bog pools,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which can be ideal wallowing spots for your dog. Be warned that the summit can be a little blowy when the wind is up and again is a popular spot for grazing sheep! You can then descend either the same way or come down Kilbert How or even down towards Howtown – with the option of taking the famous Ullswater Steamer (also pet friendly) back to Glenridding.

The Lake District provides some of the most breathtaking scenery in England,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the mix of fells and lakes offering a stunning array of vistas and views. One of the most popular destinations is around Ullswater, in the east of the Lake District. Often called England’s most beautiful lake,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and framed by Helvellyn in the west and Place Fell and High Street in the east, Ullswater is a great place for walking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both for you and your dog. The great thing about the area for dog walkers is that much of the countryside is open fell, owned mainly by the National Trust, and so you and your pet are free to roam wild.

Dog Walking Around Ullswater
For those of you looking for a more extreme walk, then the annual Boundary Walk will certainly fit the bill. The event is organised on the first Saturday of July every year to raise money for the local school and church. It covers 30 miles and involves 10,000 feet of ascent with over 24 fells tops, including Helvellyn and Place Fell. Of course you can attempt the route at any time of the year. The start is at Glencoyne Bay on the western side of Ullswater and goes via Helvellyn to the top of Kirkstone pass (the half way point) across to High Street and back to Patterdale via Place Fell. If you are interested in the walk then you and your pet would be very welcome. Full details can be found on the Patterdale Parish Boundary Walk website.
Whilst the area offers ample opportunity to walk your dog off the lead please make sure that you keep your pet under control at all times. There are literally thousands of sheep grazing on the fells and you should take especial care during the lambing season which runs from March to May. Also watch out for cows who graze from the spring until the autumn often on the open fell. The trick with cows is to be confident and keep walking – never stop or back away! If you let your dog off the lead they will usually find a way around the cows and rejoin you further along the path. Finally Ullswater is home to many roe and red deer, especially on the eastern side of the valley. If you’re lucky enough to be there in the autumn listen out for the male stags rutting calls!
Silver Point walk - 3.8 miles - Easy to Moderate
Here are 5 top walks to consider. All the distances are measured from a starting point in Patterdale at the southern end of Ullswater. All these walks can be easily identified on the Ordnance Survey OL5 explorer map.
Silver point is on the eastern side of Ullswater opposite Glenridding. It can be reached either by a low level path through Side Farm and along the Lake Shore or via a higher path. It is a beautiful walk at any time of day but especially in the afternoons with the sun shining down on, and offers simply stunning views all the way along down to Ullswater and across the lake to Helvellyn and her surrounding fells. Make sure you take the time to go to the “beach” at Silver Point – an ideal spot for a picnic in the summer, and dog paddling at all times of the year!

There are also a great range of pet friendly Ullswater Holiday Cottages available in the area.
Angle Tarn is a magical spot to the south east of Ullswater. It is easily accessible via the main path to Boredale Hause above Patterdale. The light on the water has an almost magical quality and every time you go there it looks more beautiful! There are often Canadian Geese on the tarn and this can provide another welcome distraction for your dog! You can either return via the lower path or come back over the Angle Tarn Pikes, from the top of which you get some great views north towards Ullswater and South towards Brotherswater and Kirkstone.
Place Fell - 5 miles - Moderate to Hard
Patterdale Parish Boundary Walk - 30 Miles - 10,000 Feet of Ascent – Very Hard
Helvellyn is England’s third most highest mountain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and is the “must do” walk for anyone staying in the area. There are various routes up directly from Patterdale, with the most popular being the ascent via the Grisedale Valley, to “Hole in the Wall”,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along the famous Striding Edge to the summit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and then back down via Swirral Edge and Red Tarn and down to Glenridding and Patterdale. As you ascend to Hole in the Wall don’t forget to look behind you as the views across to High Street are fantastic. Please be careful on Striding Edge itself – there is a path on the north side of the ridge. Red Tarn will provide a welcome spot for swimming for your dog – and even you if you can brave the cold!
